THE INTERVIEW

1-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Mainly all the makeup artists I’ve seen are not veiled. As a veiled makeup artist what is your comment about that?

Nouran Barghash: Veiled or unveiled at the end it’s a personal issue, and the veil shouldn’t relate to the makeup career. Personally, I don’t like just to follow the trend to be in the field. I also don’t like to give in to the notion of makeup artists and artists in general who wear strange outfits (grins).

2-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Does it help you attract veiled customers?

Nouran Barghash: I think it doesn’t matter as I’m a makeup artist and not a veil designer. I have both veiled and unveiled clients.

3-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Recently in Egypt there is a trend that many women are taking makeup art as a career. What are the qualities of a professional makeup artist?

Nouran Barghash: Yeah, it’s true but they’re not all in the same category and don’t have the same outcome. I think people can distinguish a professional makeup artist by the techniques she uses, the way she treats them, how punctual she is and how her makeup complements their beauty.

4-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Some employees can be in a bad mood due to work stress or personal problems, however their job requires that they should smile and act happy. Is there a certain makeup style that would help these women look happy and do the job?

Nouran Barghash: Wearing makeup definitely adds self-confidence to a woman. It usually releases stress, makes her confident and puts her in a good mood. But as she is in the work field less make up is better. So she can just add  some touch ups by using concealer for covering dark circles and adding some powder to let it last longer. And for a matt look, adding mascara will be good for eye opening and at the end just some blusher and light lipstick for a healthy and natural look.

5-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: You have graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Department Print Making Section. Basically you have studied a lot about advertising and the mentality of the consumer. How did this benefit you in your own makeup art?

Nouran Barghash: As the print making section is in a way more artistic than advertising, it helped in altering my vision in general. It made me expect the unexpected by trying to mix plastic art and everything I’ve learnt with makeup. As I add the artistic details of the face I can imagine all the tools of my makeup kit, because all of them complement one another; therefore, I can give the face its full potential and the beautiful look my client deserves. For me each tool is a boss in its own part. I also gained the experience of dealing with different mentalities through work itself.

6-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: What are your comments regarding the advertising industry in Egypt?

Nouran Barghash: Definitely the advertising industry is in progress in Egypt. Social media is also taking part in this industry. It’s not limited to TV only anymore. This gives the business startups and entrepreneurs the chance to advertise through social media. The multinational companies make ads specially to be exposed online. This affirms and highlights the power of social media.

7-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: What are the success tools of a makeup artist?

Nouran Barghash: The quality and the content itself are the most successful tools. We cannot also disregard the role of social media, photography and good presentation.

8-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: You knew that you wanted to be a makeup artist even before graduation. How did you prepare yourself for this career and how did you start?

Nouran Barghash: First it was a dream. Then I decided to make it true and take steps towards it by taking several courses. But I’m working on making the experience complete by learning how to break the fear of taking the responsibility of a client. Preparing myself by self-learning, searching and experimenting became my daily routine.

9-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Compared to other makeup artists your price is very reasonable. Why did you choose this pricing, although people would still seek you if you higher the price of your service?

Nouran Barghash: Price is not the indicator of success, so I won’t raise the price of the service just to let people wonder, do negative marketing, or maybe it’s positive marketing in another way!

10-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: You are multitalented, are you thinking about working in a company along with your business and passion as a makeup artist?

Nouran Barghash: No, I quitted everything since I started working as a makeup artist. I also hate commitments and routine, so if I ever think of having another job it’ll be a freelance one.

11-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Are you thinking one day to teach makeup art courses?

Nouran Barghash: If I became qualified enough.

12-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Wouldn’t you fear competition?

Nouran Barghash: No, I guess it’s very healthy for me to be thinking and creating new ideas all the time.

13-HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: What is your advice to emerging makeup artists? And what is your advice to professionals?

Nouran Barghash: To emerging makeup artists: First, never stop learning and experimenting, be punctual, don’t overdo or overuse the highlighting and contouring technique, keep it simple and natural unless heavy and dramatic makeup is required. Always remember that in makeup “less is more”.

As for professionals: Keep the good job up and keep learning, try to spread the positive tips of beauty to correct some of the wrong thoughts concerning makeup that are acquired through social media and lastly try to raise the quality of makeup artistry.

HR Revolution Middle-East Magazine: Ms. Nouran, thank you so much for being so inspiring and unique, and for this interview.
